(construction) Any of a number of materials, such foam, batting, or wooden blocks, built into the interior of a wall in order to inhibit the spread of fire, in North America most commonly taking the form of 16-inch pieces of 2x4 affixed horizontally in each of the spaces between the vertical studs within a wall.
