- Obsolete a retarded person mentally equal to a child between three and eight years old
- a very foolish or stupid person
Etymology: Fr imbécile < L imbecilis, imbecillus, feeble, weak, prob. < in-, without + baculus, staff (see bacillus): hence “without support”
