Although there are long stretches of marshy moorland along the coast, the soil is on the whole productive.
There is also Kersal Moor, 21 acres of Moorland, crossed by a Roman road, which has been noticed for the variety of its flora, and for the capture of the Oecophara Woodiella, of which there is no other recorded habitat.
The greatest extent of moorland is found in the westernmost parts of the plain, in Oldenburg and East Frisia.
The soil consists almost entirely of sand and gravel, and is covered with bleak moorland, patches of wood, and fen.
