From Middle English tohewen, from Old English tōhēawan (“to hew in pieces, chop up”), from Proto-Germanic*tōhawwaną (“to cut to pieces”), equivalent to to- + hew. Cognate with Old Frisian tehawa, Middle Low German tohouwen, Dutchtehouwen, Germanzerhauen (“to chop up, hack”).
