A xanthophyll carotenoid that occurs naturally in some fruits and vegetables, is found in the retina of the eye, and is an isomer of lutein. It is being investigated as a treatment for macular degeneration.
A yellow xanthophyll carotenoid, C40 H56 O2 , that is found in yellow corn and in the leaves of many plants, in egg yolk, and in the retina, and that may help to prevent macular degeneration.
