Split-tender Definition

noun

Two or more different forms of payment in a single transaction; typically cash and credit card.

Mark Furlette, Prepaid Card Markets and Regulation, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, 2004: In some cases, a customer will pay with the merchant's own stored-value card, which are prepaid and are often called gift cards. If the card has enough value, the transaction is approved. If the card does not have sufficient value to cover the whole transaction, it will be denied. In some cases the customer will present the gift card and a credit card for the difference, but some merchant's Point of Sale systems lack the capacity to handle a split tender such as this.
