Gurmukhi meaning

An abugida script, or writing system, designed for writing the Punjabi language. It has been adapted to write other languages, such as Braj Bhasha, Hindi, Sanskrit and Sindhi.

Origin of gurmukhi

  • From Punjabi ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ (Gurmukhī), commonly translated as "from the Mouth of the Guru", since it was standardised by Guru Angad Dev in the 16th century.
