soc - Computer Definition
(1) (System-On-Chip) Pronounced "S-O-C." All the electronic circuits required for a complete, working product contained on a single chip. While a microcontroller includes the CPU, RAM, ROM and I/O, an SoC adds additional components. For example, an SoC for a smartphone can include graphics, audio, video and camera processing in addition to the microcontroller circuits. In such cases, only a radio chip and power management chip are required for a three-chip solution. The more functions contained within the chip, the more systems can be miniaturized for handheld use with an ancillary reduction in power. See mobile platform, microcontroller, system in package and SOCcentral.com.
(2) (SOC) (Security Operations Center) A facility SOC monitors human and vehicle access within a building or complex. An information technology SOC monitors the hardware, software and networks in an organization.
