- any of a large family (Serranidae) of spiny-finned, predatory, marine percoid fishes; esp., a dark food fish (Centropristes striata) with large scales and a wide mouth, found along the Atlantic coast of the U.S.
- any of various similar fishes, as a white drum (Atractoscion nobilis) of the warm waters along the California coast
