Moral-majority Definition

(US) A faction of the Republican Party whose policies include conservatism on social and personal matters, marrying religion to the political process. Sometimes pejoratively used to describe the Republican Party since the election of Ronald Reagan to the presidency in 1980.

Origin of Moral-majority

  • Coined by conservative activist Paul Weyrich in 1979 and later popularized by televangelist Jerry Falwell.
