Kwukyel Definition


One of three early systems for writing Korean phonetically with Chinese characters before the invention of the modern hangul (한글) script, resembling the old Japanese kanbun-kundoku (漢文訓読) style. The other two ancient Korean systems were hyangchal and idu.


Origin of Kwukyel

  • From Korean 구결 (gugyeol 口訣), from Middle Chinese 口訣 (kʰúw-kwet "mnemonic rhyme"), from 口 ("mouth") + 訣 ("rhymed saying").
