The principal cultivated produce is tobacco, sago, cocoanuts, coffee, pepper, gambier and sugarcanes.
In 1796-1797 Captain Wilson, in the missionary ship " Duff," discovered the Gambier and other islands, and rediscovered the islands known to and seen by Quiros, but since called the Duff Group. Another result of Captain Cook's work was the colonization of Australia.
These cultivate gambier and pepper successfully in Bintang, and there is a considerable trade in wood.
The principal articles of export are sugar, tobacco, copra, forest products (various gums, &c.), coffee, petroleum, tea, cinchona, tin, rice, pepper, spices and gambier.
