A deity which medieval Christians mistakenly imagined that pagans, the Knights Templar and (sometimes) Muslims worshipped, and which figures into some modern occultist and Satanic religions.

Origin of baphomet

  • From medieval Latin Baphometh, from Occitan Bafometz. Probably ultimately a corruption of Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad, “Muhammad”) (compare Old Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested.
