A deity which medieval Christians mistakenly imagined that pagans, the Knights Templar and (sometimes) Muslims worshipped, and which figures into some modern occultist and Satanic religions.
From medieval LatinBaphometh, from OccitanBafometz. Probably ultimately a corruption of Arabicمُحَمَّد (muḥammad, “Muhammad”) (compare Old Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested.
