Origin of Befile

  • From Middle English befilen, from Old English befȳlan (“to befoul, defile, make dirty”), from Proto-Germanic *bi- (“be-”), *fūlijaną (“to make foul”), equivalent to be- +‎ file. Cognate with Scots befile (“to befile”), Dutch bevuilen (“to soil, dirty”). See also defile.
