A city of southern Germany on the Danube River southeast of Stuttgart. First mentioned in 854, it was later a free imperial city and reached the height of its influence in the 15th century. Napoleon defeated Austrian troops here in October 1805.

Soon after he was engaged on an important embassy to Germany, the result of which was the treaty of Ulm, signed July 1620.
