Non-REM Sleep Definition

A period of sleep characterized by decreased metabolic activity, slowed breathing and heart rate, and the absence of dreaming. Non-REM sleep occurs in the first four of the five stages of the sleep cycle, followed by REM sleep, during which dreaming occurs.
