Origin of mammetry

  • From Anglo-Norman maumeterie, a reduced form of mahumetterie (“idolatry, heathendom”), from Mahumet (“Muhammad”), from Old French Mahomet, ultimately from Arabic محمد (see Muhammad for more). Equivalent to mammet +‎ -ry.
