There are large and well-kept public parks, a common (17 acres) with a soldiers' monument, a free public library, with more than 50,000 volumes in 5907, a city hall, county and municipal court-houses, a county gaol and house of correction, a county industrial school and a state armoury.
There are three court-houses, one of granite (1839-1841) with great monolithic Corinthian pillars, another (1862), adjoining it, of brick, and a third (1908-1909) of granite, for the probate court.
The church of St Kristine (c. 1650), the court-houses, town-hall, government buildings, and high school, are noteworthy.
Most county court houses or public libraries have sections devoted to genealogy research, and these may include copies of death records.
