  1. to eat into; wear away; disintegrate acid erodes metal
  2. to form by wearing away gradually the running water eroded a gully
  3. to cause to deteriorate, decay, or vanish

Etymology: Fr éroder < L erodere < e-, out, off + rodere, to gnaw: see rat
