Etymology: Ger kreosot < Gr kreas (gen. kreōs), flesh (see crude) + sōtēr, savior < sōzein, to save, preserve < IE base *teu-, to swell (> tumor); so named (1832) by K. v. Reichenbach (1788-1869), Ger scientist
