Meantime hostilities more car less constant continued with England, but, though in 1322 Edward made an incursion as far as Edinburgh, the internal weakness of his government prevented his gaining any real success, while in October of this year Bruce again ravaged Yorkshire, defeated the English near Byland, and almost captured their king.
He took and held Berwick, and (14th of October 1322) defeated Edward with heavy loss near Byland Abbey in Yorkshire, where the highlanders scaled a cliff and drove the English from a formidable position.
Jervaulx Abbey was founded in 1156 by Cistercians from Byland, who had previously settled near Askrigg.
William acknowledged that he had been constrained by ecclesiastical censure to make peace with Byland.
By 1142 the community had relocated to Old Byland, and had sufficient resources to create its first grange at Wildon.
