any of a genus (Santolina) of Old World shrubs of the composite family; esp., a small, bushy, evergreen shrub (S. chamaecyparissus) with silvery gray, woolly, aromatic leaves and long-stalked, yellow flower heads, used in gardens and as a ground cover
