to allow or force (blood, etc.) to flow from its normal vessels into the surrounding body tissues

Etymology: L extra (see extra-) + vas, a vessel + -ate

intransitive verb

  1. to flow out or escape into surrounding tissues: said of blood, lymph, etc.
  2. to flow out, as lava from a vent
