A town of southern Switzerland at the northern end of Lake Maggiore. The Locarno Pact between Germany and various European powers was signed here in 1925, in an effort to promote peace and maintain existing territorial borders. Today the city is a popular resort.x
Above Locarno is the romantically situated sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso (now rendered easily accessible by a funicular railway) that commands a glorious view over the lake and the surrounding country.
Further, in 1512, the Swiss Confederation as a whole won the valleys of Locarno with Lugano, which, combined with the 15th century conquests by the Forest Cantons, were formed in 1803 into the new Canton of Ticino or Tessin.
