A stock that is in high demand, either because of its performance or because it is in a sector whose popu- larity has soared. During the stock market boom of the late 1990s, technology and telecom stocks were frequently called hot stocks. The term often was applied to shares of an initial public offering that were in high demand and quickly ran up in price after they were issued.
