(1) A device that drives multiple headphones from a mixing console for studio recording.
(2) An amplifier designed to output the low wattage headphones require. Headphone amps can accept digital audio from computers and CD players or analog audio from stereo preamps and mobile devices. The headphone amp may be a stationary device or a portable unit for traveling with mobile devices. In many cases, the amplification boost from the source, whether USB or headphone jack, to the headphones may not be significant, but when high-end headphones are used, many music lovers claim that a quality headphone amp makes a big difference.
