  • From Middle English yoten, yeten (“to pour”), from Old English ġēotan (“to pour”), from Proto-Germanic *geutaną (“to pour”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰew-, *ǵʰōw- (“to pour”). Cognate with Dutch gieten (“to pour”), German gießen (“to pour”), Danish gyde (“to pour”). Related to gush, geyser.
