  • From Middle English, from Old English ǣrist (“arising, rising up, resurrection, awakening”), from Proto-Germanic *uzristiz (“a rising up”), from Proto-Germanic *uzrīsaną (“to rise up”), from Proto-Germanic *uz- (“out”) + Proto-Germanic *rīsaną (“to rise”).
