The capital and largest city of Armenia south of Tbilisi, Georgia. An ancient city founded on the site of a fortress established in the eighth century B.C., it was strategically important as a trade center on caravan routes linking Transcaucasia and India after the seventh century A.D. Population: 1,100,000.
