How Are the Sixty Eight Teams Chosen for the Tournament?
Thirty one of the sixty eight teams receive automatic bids to the tournament. A team can win an automatic bid if the team won their conference tournaments, or if they were the regular season conference champion. For example, the Ivy League conference does not have a conference tournament. Thus, the winner of the regular season for the Ivy League conference receives an automatic bid to the tournament.
The remaining teams are selected by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee is a unique committee that is appointed by the NCAA. A team’s schedule, a team’s record, and a team’s history all play a role in whether the team will receive an “at large” bid.
How Is the Tournament Structured?
The teams are split into four different regions. Each region has teams that are seeded from one to sixteen. The seeding for teams is chosen by the Selection Committee.
The higher a team is seeded (meaning closer to one), the better the Committee considers the team. The number one seed plays the number sixteen seed, the number two seed plays the number fifteen seed, etc. These brackets are not reevaluated after the different rounds of the tournament. This means that the team’s seeding cannot change.
The tournament is single elimination. This means that once a team loses, the team is out of the tournament. There are no consolation games in the NCAA tournament.
There are six rounds of the tournament. The rounds are as follows:

The teams are often given nicknames for reaching a certain round, such as the “Sweet Sixteen” for the regional semifinals, or the “Elite Eight” for the regional finals.
Some History Behind the Tournament
The tournament began in 1939. It was created by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. When the tournament first began, only eight teams played in the tournament. This was later expanded to sixteen teams, and then twenty five teams. By 1985, there were sixty four teams playing in the tournament. The most recent expansion of the tournament occurred in 2010, when the tournament was expanded from sixty five teams to sixty eight teams.
Under the new expansion, there will be four play in games before the tournament begins. A play in game is a game between two teams that are on the bubble of the tournament. The winner of the game makes the tournament, and plays the number one seed.
