A state of northern India in the basin of the Ganges River. Settled in ancient times by Indo-Iranian invaders, the region was part of Asoka's empire in the 3rd century BC and was later under Gupta and Mughal rule before falling to the British in the 19th and 20th centuries AD. Lucknow is the capital.
