In May 2006, the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) reversed itself and voted against a proposed agreement for an .xxx generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) reserved for pornography. Some argued that .xxx would serve as a positive, if voluntary, means of segmenting the Internet. ICANN tentatively approved the new TLD before receiving an unprecedented level of correspondence in opposition. The .xxx domain has since been rejected multiple times.
