traffic capacity definition - telecom
  1. The maximum volume of cells, blocks, frames, packets, calls, messages, or other units of data that a circuit or network can support, or that a switch, router, or other system can process.
  2. The measure of the number of simultaneous conversations that a key telephone system (KTS) or PBX can support. Traffic capacity depends on processor capacity and bus capacity. Processor capacity is measured in terms of the maximum number of Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCAs) and Busy Hour Call Completions (BHCCs) the system can support. The busy hour is the busiest hour of the day, ideally as determined by empirical traffic studies. The bus capacity, i.e., the capacity of the switch matrix, usually is evaluated in terms of Centum Call Seconds (CCS) capacity, with a centum call second being 100 call seconds. One hour contains 3,600 call seconds (60 seconds times 60 minutes), or 36 CCS.
