protector definition - telecom
A device that protects equipment and facilities from abnormally high voltage or current surges or spikes such as those caused by lightening strikes. The original carbon-based protectors have been obsoleted by gas-tube protectors and semiconductor resistor-based protectors. Good electrical protection requires good electrical grounding, and is essential in high-lightening areas. Synonymous with surge protector.
