polling definition - telecom
  1. A procedure by which a machine accesses a network, calls another machine, and downloads documents, files, or other data stored in the remote machine, commonly with security provided on the basis of a programmable poll code.
  2. A procedure by which a central computer controls network channel access by querying other computers or terminal devices to invite them to transmit data. Polling typically is in a predetermined query sequence, and the invitation is for transmission for a limited time, perhaps measured in milliseconds.
