piconet
piconet definition - telecom
An imprecise, relative term used to describe a very small wireless network. Cellular radio networks, for example, are described, in order from largest to smallest, as macronets, micronets, and piconets. Bluetooth devices can establish ad hoc piconets with a maximum radius of 100 meters at maximum power level, although they are generally much smaller. The Bluetooth device that initiates the piconet acts as the master station and can include as many as seven slaved devices in the network. A device can participate in multiple piconets and act as a bridge between them, forwarding packets from one piconet to another in a scatternet configuration. See also ad hoc mode, Bluetooth, cellular, macrocell, master/slave, microcell, and scatternet.
