A type of amplification that occurs in a single, discrete location. Also known as discrete amplification. Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), and most amplifiers, perform the process of amplification on a lumped, or discrete, basis. See also amplifier, distributed amplification, EDFA, and Raman amplifier.
