IEEE definition - telecom
A worldwide not-for-profit professional association for the advancement of technology.The IEEE establishes standards and otherwise serves as a leading technical authority in areas including aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, and consumer electronics. In telecommunications, the IEEE is most notable for its 802 Working Group, which set local and metropolitan area network (LAN and MAN) standards.The IEEE formed in 1963, with the merger of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), formed in 1884, and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), formed in 1912.
