  1. A negative ion formed by the attachment of an oxygen (O) atom and a hydrogen (H) atom.
  2. In telecommunications, hydroxyl ions are a contaminant introduced into the single-mode optical fiber (SMF) during the manufacturing process.The hydroxyl ions cause water peak attenuation in several wavelength windows, rendering them unusable, which has considerable implications for high speed fiber optics transmission systems (FOTS) employing coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM).
