high-order mode

high-order mode definition - telecom
A relatively highly transverse path taken by an optical signal through a waveguide. Some high-order modes can be so transverse as to be less than the critical angle and, therefore, penetrate the interface between the core and cladding and be permanently lost in the cladding. See mode for more detail. See also cladding, core, critical angle, low-order mode, and waveguide.
