G
G definition - telecom
- (Giga). From the Greek gigas, meaning giant, translates to billion.
- In transmission systems and internal computer busses, GHz (GigaHertz) is a billion (10 9 ) Hertz and Gbps (Gigabit per second) is a billion (10 9 ) bits per second. In transmission systems, therefore, a billion is exactly 1,000,000,000 since the measurement is based on a base 10, or decimal, number system.
- Hard disks and flash drives measure computer storage in SI units, which also are based on the base 10, or decimal, system, so GB is one billion (10 9 ) bytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes.
- Internal computer memory is based on a base 2, or binary, number system. A GB of internal memory, therefore is 1,073,741,824 (2 30 ) bytes. The term GB comes from the fact that 1,073,741,824 is nominally, or approximately, 1,000,000,000. See also byte, Hertz, and SI.
- G. The G series of ITU-T Recommendations. The G series addresses transmission systems and media, digital systems and networks. See G series.
