exchange definition - telecom
  1. A central office exchange (CO or COE) of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and all of the equipment contained therein for the purpose of interconnecting (i.e., exchanging connections between) the lines and trunks terminating there. See also CO, line, line side, PSTN, trunk, and trunk side.
  2. The area served by a central office exchange (CO or COE). Synonymous with carrier serving area (CSA). See also CO and CSA.
