dopant definition - telecom
A material added to another material during the manufacturing process to alter its composition and create a material with more desirable characteristics. The manufacture of glass optical fiber (GOF) involves adding dopants such as erbium and germanium to pure silicon dioxide in order to variously alter the light conducting properties of the core and cladding.
