  1. In communications terminology, a channel is a means of supporting a connection between two devices, such as a transmitter and a receiver, in support of a single communication. More specifically, a channel is a logical connection over a physical circuit in support of a single conversation.A physical circuit may support only a single channel in support of a single conversation. A multichannel circuit can support many channels through some form of multiplexing that supports many conversations.
  2. In data processing terminology, particularly IBM, a channel is a high-speed two-way connection between mainframe host computer and a peripheral. See also multiplexer.
