asynchronous definition - telecom
From Latin and Greek origins, asynchronous translates as not together with time. Referring to signals or events that bear no relationship to timing and, therefore, can be considered occurring at random instants and, for recurring events, at random intervals. See also asynchronous transmission and synchronous.
