skip suggests a springing forward lightly and quickly, leaping on alternate feet, and, of inanimate things, deflection from a surface in a series of jumps; bound implies longer, more vigorous leaps, as in running, or by an object thrown along the ground; hop suggests a single short jump, as on one leg, or a series of short, relatively jerky jumps; ricochet is used of an inanimate object that has been thrown or shot and that bounds or skips in glancing deflection from a surface
