Stanine stands for standard nine and is any of the nine statistical units from a scale of 1 to 9 which is used to indicate a performance level on a psychological or educational test.
An example of stanine is a score of 1, 2 or 3 by test takers on a scale of 1 to 9, scores which are considered to be below average.
