dividend that isnt part of a companys regular dividend payment schedule. For
example, a special dividend may be made to give investors a higher return
because the company did exceedingly well. Those special dividends usually are
paid at the end of the companys fiscal year. A company also may pay a special
dividend when it spins off one of its businesses into a separate concern.
