(sĭm-bîrskˈ, syĭm-)

A city of western Russia on the Volga River east-southeast of Moscow. Founded in 1648 on the site of an earlier fort, it was the birthplace of V.I. Lenin and was known as Ulyanovsk from 1924 to 1991. Population: 623,000.
