PDP-10 or Programmed Data Processor-10 Hacker Definition
One of an earlier series of
minicomputers produced by Digital Electronic Corporation (DEC). These
minicomputers not only made time-sharing real but also held a special place in hacker history because they were used
in the 1970s by academic computing centers and research laboratories, including
the MIT Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab.
Some aspects of the instruction set (especially the bit-field instructions) are to this day considered by some to be unsurpassed. The PDP-10 was eventually made obsolete by the VAX machines (a descendant of the PDP-11) when DEC realized that the PDP-10 and the VAX computer systems were in competition with each other. DEC decided to concentrate its software development efforts on the more profitable choiceVAX. The PDP-10 computer was eliminated from DECs product line in 1983.
